Point of view: Adolin, Teft, Dalinar, Kaladin
Setting: The Shattered Plains
Dalinar and his army fight their way forward with Bridge Four. Dalinar desperately hopes that the bridge is still there to save his army and is surprised to find Kaladin's force standing strong against the Parshendi. As he continues to fight, a Parshendi Shardbearer steps in to fight him.
Kaladin begins to take control of the army and gives orders to begin the retreat. When most of the army is across, he finds that some squadrons won't go because they won't leave Dalinar behind. At the forefront is Adolin, who is fighting desperately to get to his father, yet keep his army protected. Kaladin forces Adolin to command the army's retreat by telling him that Kaladin will find his father. Adolin sends the Cobalt Guard with him.
Dalinar fights the Parshendi Shardbearer but is still able to put up the fight despite the fact that his armor is badly cracked. He eventually falls to the ground. The Shardbearer shatters his helm and says: "It is you. I have found you at last." At this point Kaladin breaks through the Parshendi. Dalinar, stunned from having been kicked in the head, sees him glowing but believes it to be his imagination.
Kaladin weakens the Shardbearer by using a break in the Shardplate to wound the Bearer's leg. The Parshendi continue to chant, but do not intervene as they looked terrified, as Kaladin puts Dalinar onto Gallant and escapes. They retreat to the plateau, where the Parshendi don't attack them.
Dalinar convinces Bridge Four to return with him, promising them that they will be safe. They then head back to the warcamps.
