“ | Though many wished Urithiru to be built in Alethela, it was obvious that could not be. And so we asked for it to be placed westward, in the place nearest to Honor. | ” |
Point of view: Kaladin, Teft
Setting: Sadeas's warcamp, the Shattered Plains
Kaladin is buffeted in the highstorm. Yet Syl stays by his side, fearing for him. With the advantage of a third-person perspective, she helps him fight the storm. She asks him to hold on to the roof when she sees him slipping. A similar tactic is applied with the steel ring attached to the end of the rope. As Kaladin falls back and catches the ring, he can no longer control his to & fro motion, and keeps smashing into the rock. He is sure he isn't going to survive this ordeal, on the roof, clutching the glowing sphere.
Abruptly the storm stops. Kaladin reasons he must be dead, yet he wonders why, then, he can feel the wet rock beneath him. In that silence, a face appears to him. A face that was dark, yet faintly outlined in the even darker sky. It looked inhuman, and seemed to be smiling at him. The face fades, and after a few more moments, so does Kaladin's consciousness.
Rock is the first out of the barrack to check on Kaladin after the highstorm's end, with Teft trailing him. Teft thinks to himself that the Horneater actually believed that Kaladin would survive, then wonders why he does not believe in Kaladin. He looks up and sees Kaladin in a bloodied and bruised state, and assumes the worst. However, Kaladin's eyes snap open after that thought, shocking all the bridgemen present. Teft additionally realizes that the sphere he had given to Kaladin is dun, which should be impossible, as highstorms are known to recharge spheres.
