Point of view: Dalinar, Adolin
Setting: The Shattered Plains
Dalinar, Adolin, and Elhokar all immediately begin to race for the chasmfiend, hoping to kill it before it can harm any bystanders. Sadeas uses his Grandbow, weakening the creature from a distance while Dalinar and Adolin go for its many legs. Elhokar distracts it and, in so doing, the strap on Elhokar's saddle breaks and he is thrown to the ground. Just as Elhokar is about to be crushed by the chasmfiend, Dalinar hurls himself beneath its descending claw, and with Shardplate-enhanced strength, catches the claw, giving Elhokar time to escape. This is one of the first prominent examples of Dalinar's prowess on the battlefield that earned him the nickname the Blackthorn.
Adolin continues to cut off its legs, and the chasmfiend is eventually unable to support its own weight. Elhokar summons his Shardblade once again and uses it to kill the felled creature, then harvests its gemheart.
