“ | Three of sixteen ruled, but now the Broken One reigns. | ” |
–Collected: Chachanan, 1173, 84 seconds pre-death. Subject: a cutpurse with the wasting sickness, of partial Iriali descent. |
Point of view: Kaladin
Setting: Sadeas's warcamp, the Shattered Plains
Once the highstorm is nearly finished, Kaladin goes out as soon as it is safe. While outside he is spotted by Gaz who starts hurling insults at him, but Kaladin tells him he is going to the Honor Chasm. This makes Gaz pause as most men who go to the Honor Chasm commit suicide.
As Kaladin is about to throw himself off the chasm edge, Syl returns carrying a poisonous blackbane leaf. She attempts to convince him not to kill himself, and to help the other bridgemen. Kaladin initially dismisses Syl's pleas, saying that he fails everyone he tries to help. Syl counters that Kaladin cannot fail these bridgemen as they will die regardless, and convinces him to have one more try.
Upon Kaladin's return to camp, Gaz calls him a coward for not following through with his threat. However, Kaladin tells Gaz that he did die at the chasm and that Gaz now has Kaladin's spirit with which to deal. Furthermore, he demands to be made bridgeleader and then offers to bribe Gaz to keep out of his way.
Once back in the barracks with the other bridgemen, he demands to know one of their names, and eventually Teft introduces himself. Kaladin introduces himself and tells them he is their bridgeleader before getting everyone else's name and then makes a promise to himself that he would protect them.
