The Sibling is the third of three super-spren - akin to the Stormfather and the Nightwatcher - associated with the order of Knights Radiant known as Bondsmiths. They have gone into hiding for reasons unknown.[2][3][4]

A series of related records left by an Elsecaller in Urithiru's library drawers of the gem archive there, link the Sibling to the health of the tower city. The entries relate the decline of the tower's functionality (particularly with respect to habitation failures) and to the withdrawal of the Sibling. The author argues that the spren's disappearance was neither intentional nor a result of internal strife amongst the Knights Radiant.[2][5][6]

Characteristics[]

That the Sibling is referred to as 'they' by the Stormfather[4] points to it being gender neutral/non-binary, unlike each the Stormfather and the Nightwatcher (who are male and female, respectively). According to Brandon, the Sibling did not view themself as male or female. (And considered it odd that so many spren would adopt human genders.)[7]*

Brandon has stated that the Sibling is very relevant.[8]

The Sibling calls Raboniel "The Lady of Pain", as she was originally known thousands of years ago.[9]

Also according to Brandon, it's currently outside the realm of plausibility for the Sibling to become a Blade for its Bondsmith (i.e., Navani) but not impossible.[10]

Knowledge[]

According to the Sibling, those individuals who are isolated, those with permeable souls, respond better to spren sometimes.[11]

Quotes[]

"There is ... a third sibling. They are not with us."

–Stormfather to Dalinar[4]

My research into the cognitive reflections of spren at the tower has been deeply illustrative. Some thought that the Sibling had withdrawn from men by intent - but I find counter to that theory.

–From Urithiru Library Drawers 1-1, first zircon[2]

Something is happening to the Sibling. I agree this is true, but the division among the Knights Radiant is not to blame. Our perceived worthiness is a separate issue.

–From drawer 1-1, third zircon[6]

Good night, dear Urithiru. Good night, sweet Sibling. Good night, Radiants.

–From drawer 29-29, ruby[3]

History[]

In the millenia since the abandonment of Urithiru and the Recreance, according to the Stormfather (who refuses to reveal more information because of the way his siblings were harmed by humankind in the past), the Sibling has been "slumbering."[3]

The Sibling is a child of both Honor and Cultivation. They hadn't been able to make the tower function any longer because something had happened to the tower's Light.[12]

The Sibling resides in the basement of the crystal pillar of Urithiru, and controls the functions and defenses of that tower.[13] They are also now bonded to Navani.[14][15]

Notes[]

*In a later Q&A, Brandon referred to the Sibling as "he".[16]

Speculation[]

The source from within the library drawers speaks of the Sibling in the present tense,[6][3] and also talks about dealing with the Unmade.[17] Sja-anat tells Shallan that "We were made, then unmade."[18] Perhaps the three super-spren were created similarly.

There are those who think that Urithiru is the Sibling, as the city is described as being a living thing by the Stormfather that is now just asleep.[3] Also there are long tendrils of gemstones in the heart of the tower that Navani says would be used for Soulcasting the essence of blood,[citation needed] which some believe are like the veins of the tower.

Q&A with Brandon[]

Q. Is the Sibling a Singer?

A. The Sibling is not, good question.[19]
