Progression of the Chapter:
Dalinar and Evi prepare for battle, with Evi performing a ritual involving burning glyph-inscribed papers. Evi advises Dalinar to fight without anger, but Dalinar focuses on the practical aspects of the conflict. As they prepare, Dalinar reflects on his relationship with Evi and the political maneuvering that has led to this point. Dalinar and Gavilar discuss battle tactics and the importance of defeating Highprince Kalanor.
Dalinar dons his Shardplate and summons Oathbringer as Kalanor's forces advance. Gavilar's forces use new tactics to flank and weaken the enemy. Dalinar, driven by the Thrill, charges into battle, killing many, including some of his own men. Kadash informs Dalinar that Kalanor has committed to the battle. Dalinar orders his elites to pull back and prepares to face Kalanor.
Dalinar confronts Kalanor, and they engage in a fierce duel. Despite Kalanor's skill, Dalinar gains the upper hand and shatters Kalanor's breastplate. Kalanor attempts to flee, but Dalinar pursues him. They continue their duel atop a rock formation, with Dalinar ultimately overpowering Kalanor.
Dalinar then kills Kalanor, who pleads for mercy. Despite his victory, Dalinar feels empty. When Kalanor's honor guard attempts to retrieve his Shardblade and Plate, Dalinar kills them and reclaims the Shards. Overwhelmed by the Thrill, Dalinar nearly attacks his brother Gavilar but stops himself. Gavilar praises Dalinar, who offers the Shards to Gavilar as a gift. Gavilar accepts, and Dalinar resolves to support his brother and never seek the throne for himself.
