Inhabitants Spren

Celebrant is a city in Shadesmar. It isn't as densely populated as most human cities, but the variety of spren there is stunning. Reachers like Ico and his sailors are common, but there are also spren that look much like Adolin's sword, at least before she'd been killed. They are made entirely of vines, though they have crystal hands and wear human clothing. Equally common are spren with inky black skin that shine with a variety of colors when light hits them right. Their clothing seems part of them, like that of the Cryptics and honorspren.[1]

There are other spren with skin like cracked stone, molten light shining from within. Still others have skin the color of old white ashes - and when Kaladin saw one of these point toward something, the skin stretching at the joint of its arm disintegrated and blew away, revealing the joint and knobs of the humerus. The skin then quickly regrew.[1]

The variety reminds Kaladin of the costumes of the Cult of Moments - though he doesn't spot a single honorspren. And it doesn't seem to him like the other spren mix much. Humans there are rare enough that he - and Syl, imitating an Alethi - turn heads.[1]

Kaladin observes that there are no children in the city. Syl tells him that there have been a few, but that they just don't look little, like human children.[1]

Description[]

Adolin describes it as a city on an island, which is actually a lake in the Physical Realm called the Sea of Spears, in the southeast of Alethkar by the ruins of Rathalas.[2]

Pattern describes it as a prominent city. That in it, they could find passage wherever they wished to go.[2]

Buildings are constructed using bricks in a variety of colors or blocks of many different types of stone. Each building is a hodgepodge of materials with no pattern Kaladin can determine.[1]

When he asks how they get building materials, and whether there quarries on this side, Syl tells him that she's not sure, but that she thinks maybe the spren make it appear on this side, somehow, from the other side (i.e., the Physical Realm), perhaps like Ico did with ice.[1]

Towers in the city's center show the time by way of fires burning in a set of vertical holes.

Market[]

The market is composed of mostly roofless stalls open to the air, with goods piled on tables. Even in comparison to the improvised market of Urithiru, this seems ephemeral to Kaladin.[1]

In a merchant stall, Kaladin found sitting in a locked, glass-topped box, a long thin silvery chain, for sale for a thousand broams.* He looked down at the box, which was locked to the table and guarded by a small orange spren that looked like people.[1]

There is also a Returned painting** - described as triangles of red, black and gray - in a merchant stall in the market, but just how it came to be there remains unknown.[1]

Fashion[]

Adolin observes that the spren seem to wear whatever. He points out an Alethi officer's coat over an Azish scribe's vest, a Tashikki wrap worn with trousers, and almost a full Thaylen tlmko, without the boots.[1]

Notes[]

*The price on this chain is likely as high as it is because it is made of Threnodite silver, which is extremely valuable there given the world's Cognitive Shadows.

**The paintings are how Endowment gets messages to the Returned. Someone of the Third Heightening has enough Breath that when they are in the throes of the creative muse, the Shard can channel into them, and they can paint a message into their art which someone with a Divine Breath is Connected enough to receive.[3]

Whether the painting in Celebrant is the same as that observed in Warbreaker remains unknown.[4]
