Azir is a nation/kingdom in south-western Roshar. Ethnically Makabaki, the people from Azir are known as Azish. Azir is descended of Makabakam, the largest of the Silver Kingdoms.
The Bronze Palace in Azir is located in the capital city of Azimir.[1]
Azir has been suggested to be warmer than Alethkar, but cooler than Iri.[2]
Azir is the location of one of the ten Oathgates.[3]
Legends there say that those who consume Azish truthberries speak only the truth until the next sunset.[4]
The viziers of Azir have explained that although Azir might claim to be an empire, and most of the other countries in the region play along with this, as soon as demands therein grow to be too extravagant, the others might not necessarily obey.[5]
Azimir[]
Azimir is larger in population than Kholinar.[6]
Azish[]
Appearance[]
Azish have dark brown skin and black hair and speak with a smooth accent.[7]
The inscription on the image reads as follows:
"This folio page shows contemporary designs out of Azir, using local models. Though these are specifically male civil servant outfits, the styles have deeply influenced all Azish fashion."
Lift notes that important Azish folk wear big, drooping coats with really wide sleeves and patterns that argue with each other. She compares them to children who had snuck into their parents' wardrobe, but she thinks their hats to be 'nifty'.[8]
The Azish are normally quite proper, overly encumbered with robes and hats.[9]
Regal robes of Azish patterns weigh Prime Aqasix Yanagawn down, along with the Imperial Yuanazixin: a fancy hat with sweeping sides.[10]
Characteristics[]
Lift states that people in Azir love to write stuff down ... and they love information. That they love trading it with the people of Tashikk.[11]
Wyndle notes that this is a distinguishing factor of their cultural identity.[11]
Lift thinks that everyone in Azir doesn't shut up about the patterns in their clothing.[12]
Religion[]
The Azish worship Yaezir, Kadasix of Kings, and hold in high esteem the Kadasixes, or Heralds, and their spoken word.[8]
Governance[]
Azir's ruler is the Prime Aqasix, who is elected by the viziers of the nation based on the applications they receive from those interested in the position. In the case of Gawx, the viziers determined that he had submitted the best application by performing the miracle of Regrowth (actually Lift's doing) and was thus named Prime.[8]
“ | "He was dead and he returned. What better application could we ask for?" [8] | ” |
Although the Azish have a large bureaucracy, a change in government could cause upheaval. Renarin thinks it might be easier for the new Azish emperor to change policy, since policy is well defined enough to change. Navani believes the Azish will listen to reason, because they always do.[3]
